What Jiangsu’s Export Growth Signals for Foreign Founders Building in China

Jiangsu’s first three quarters show how small consumer products, free trade certificates and faster customs clearance can drive exports. Here is what foreign founders should note when registering or operating a company in China.

Jiangsu’s Export Performance at a Glance

For foreign founders considering a China-based company, provincial trade data can offer a useful signal of where manufacturing and export activity is concentrated. According to Nanjing Customs, Jiangsu’s total foreign trade in the first three quarters of the year reached RMB 5.69 trillion, up 29.8% year on year. That growth rate was 11 percentage points higher than the national average.

Large equipment is one driver. But the source article focuses on smaller manufactured goods and consumer products, showing how niche categories can support export growth. For founders, the lesson is practical: China-based operations can serve global markets through specialised products, not only through large-scale industrial equipment.

Hospitality Textiles: Product Quality and Tariff Relief

Hotel linens are a seasonal export category, and Jiangsu producers are active in this segment. At Jiangsu Kangnaixin Textile Technology, raw materials go through multiple stages of drawing and yarn twisting to improve fabric performance.

The company’s customs manager, Chen Qian, said the products are soft, skin-friendly and more wash-resistant, requiring gradual replacement only after about a year and a half of use. The company says it can produce consistent, high-quality output from yarn of the same density and has won orders from well-known hotel groups in China and overseas.

Tariff treatment matters. Chen said a China–ASEAN Free Trade Area certificate of origin issued by Huai’an Customs reduced the product’s tariff rate from 12% to zero, lowering import costs for customers and helping the company retain existing clients and open new markets. From January to August, the company’s export value reached RMB 180 million.

The company also customises products for different markets. For Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa, it developed pool towels and coloured towels designed to withstand strong tropical sunlight and pool use without fading quickly. For premium hotels, it used proprietary deodorisation technology to develop a waterproof, fragrant down duvet core.

What Founders Can Take Away

Sleep Products: Niche Consumer Demand

Demand for better sleep has created export opportunities. Suzhou Jili Silk, a long-established company in Zhenze, Wujiang, developed a silk cooling weighted eye mask aimed at comfortable, light-blocking sleep. General Manager Zhu Wenchao said the mask suits a fully dark sleep environment and combines cooling, breathability, softness and pressure relief.

After launch, monthly sales steadily exceeded 100,000 units. In the first nine months of the year, export value of silk eye masks more than doubled year on year. The company’s foreign trade revenue rose significantly, with export sales accounting for 65% of total sales, and products reaching 46 countries and regions.

Suzhou Opple Lighting addressed a different sleep preference: soft light and atmosphere. Its overseas supply chain head, Jiao Weide, said the company developed a patented water-lily-colour light sleep-aid technology that extracts a special pale pink tone from a broad spectrum and optimises spectral bands to support melatonin secretion and create a relaxed pre-sleep environment. He linked the technology plus origin-policy benefits to a continued positive export trend this year.

Seasonal Goods and Customs Efficiency

Autumn is peak delivery season for Christmas ribbons, bells and related products. Toy and craft makers across Jiangsu are producing and packing goods for global shelves.

Yangzhou Anbeisi Toy Co. showed alpaca toys wearing Christmas hats and snowmen with scarves. Workers were producing plush Christmas toys for ASEAN markets. Foreign trade manager Lu Chunhua said a China–ASEAN certificate of origin issued by Yangzhou Customs gives these toys a 10% tariff preference locally. In the first three quarters, the company applied for 23 free trade agreement certificates of origin and enjoyed nearly RMB 300,000 in importing-country tariff benefits. Yangzhou Customs supervised export of toy products worth about RMB 1.52 billion and issued 367 certificates under various FTAs.

Customs speed also matters. At Taizhou Feiyan Crafts, workers were rushing to make feather boas, angel wings and other Christmas crafts. General Manager Dai Xingquan said customers generally required delivery one month earlier this year, and the company would switch to Easter products after shipping the Christmas goods. In the first three quarters, Taizhou Customs supervised export of Christmas decorations worth RMB 1.7378 million, up 96.17% year on year.

In Changshu, Pengyunxin General Merchandise uses market procurement trade. Zhang Shuangshuang, the person in charge, said ribbons and bells sell best around Christmas and must be included in each export batch. Under market procurement trade, goods can be consolidated without waiting and reach destinations in just over a month. Changshu Customs operates a “transit plus integrated” dual customs channel, allowing market procurement goods to exit via 149 ports nationwide, with declaration-to-release taking as little as 22 minutes.

Operational Implications

Food Exports: Moving Up the Value Chain

In Baoying County, lotus roots are being harvested and sent to Yangzhou Tiancheng Food’s processing workshop. Foreign trade manager Diao Yuhong said the company’s lotus root product exports exceeded RMB 28 million in the first three quarters, with orders booked into early next year. Yangzhou Customs supervised exports of lotus root and related products worth over RMB 100 million, up about 3% year on year.

The source notes a shift from basic fresh lotus root sales toward deeper processing. A single lotus root can become boiled, salted or quick-frozen products sold to Southeast Asia, Europe and the United States.

Practical Notes for Foreign Founders

The Jiangsu examples point to several considerations for foreign founders registering or operating a company in China:

These are practical signals, not guarantees. Founders should verify registration, customs and tax requirements with qualified professionals and local authorities before committing to a structure.
